I Didn’t See the News Today

Person in hooded jacket surrounded by flying newspapers and digital screens with headlines about fake news and global panic

As humans, we are not supposed to have every bit of info available at the tips of our fingers. Our minds are not built to hand the barrage of information that is thrown at us every day. The news is constantly on, it’s in our social media feeds, it is being delivered directly to our phones that are glued to our hands. Everywhere we go, we are just seconds away from knowing (“knowing”) what is going on all over the world. Some people take it at face value while others dig deeper into the situations. Every moment of our lives is filled with news around the world and sometimes we don’t even know what is true!

Most of us understand that our mind and our thoughts shape around the information that we consume. Not just information, but everything, the stories we read and shows that we watch. Our minds meld around that and shape how we think and feel. I feel like this is why so many people in the world suffer from anxiety and depression now days. We allow all the negative things in our minds, because let’s face it, the news is hardly ever positive. It feels like the world is falling apart and that is what we see. We don’t see the homeless person who finally get a home. We don’t see the young prodigy solving the worlds mysteries or writing new symphonies. We don’t see the couple who finally found each other after many attempts at dating.

We see all the chaos and sadness of the world. I feel like because the news focuses on that we all focus on that. Our minds have been corrupted to expect nothing but bad things.

I don’t watch the news, and I avoid news about all the things going on in the world that makes me sad. I still get some of it, because you can’t avoid it all. Because I avoid it, I don’t always know what is going on in the world. Which, in turn gets people asking me the question of “Do you live under a rock?” Usually screamed in my face like I am an incompetent child that understands nothing.

When I was nine years old a woman in my state drown her two kids. She belted them into the car and sent the car into the lake. Then lied and told the cops someone stole her car with her kids in it. This is when I realized my brain was too sensitive to the bad news. I had nightmares for months after that. I could feel what those two boys felt as their mother betray them and sent them to their deaths. I have not watched the news since. I catch things from time to time and trust me…the world wants me to know the news because my friends will tell me everything I need to know.

As someone with strong empathy and depression…I should avoid it. We are told to avoid things that make us more depressed, but then get yelled at by the world when we don’t know what is going on. We are supposed to know what is going on but not be depressed about it. Though, we are not supposed to be depressed at all because “What do you have to be so depressed about?” Like I can control being depressed in the first place. Do you think I LIKE being down in the dumps and putting on a happy face to make everyone else feel comfortable? I love so much that my brain makes me feel invisible and useless and uninterested in life.

The point of this blog was to say that we shouldn’t watch so much news if we can’t handle it. People like me that suffer with depression already without the shadows of the world adding to it. People shouldn’t try to make me feel guilty because I don’t know what is going on in the world. I protect my brain as much as possible from added negativity. Now I don’t even know if I covered the point of this blog post. Now I am just annoyed that my brain sucks and the world wants to make it worse.
